Steven Spielberg returns to the cult of Paramount Transformers franchise alongside longtime producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and with longtime mayhem master Michael Bay in talks to possibly direct the next tentpole for vehicle fanboys.
Spielberg will focus on all creative aspects of the upcoming live-action film based on a line of Hasbro toys. He will also executive produce the eighth installment as Paramount seeks to develop the Transformers universe. Bay directed the first five films of the Transformers franchise as he and his creative team allowed titans and other techno creatures to clash amidst spectacularly designed and executed action sequences.
Bay led Transformers (2007), Revenge of the Dead (2009), The darkness of the moon (2011), Age of extinction (2014) and The last knight (2017). Travis Knight directed the 2018 prequel, set in the 1980s Bumblebee.
It’s understood Transformers Headliner Shia LaBeouf will not return for the eighth installment, and there is no word on a storyline and possible alternate casting. LaBeouf plays young Sam Witwicky, a teenager who bought his first car but never expected it to come to life, in the first film. Transformers film, and returned for the sequels.
Spielberg met with Paramount Pictures co-chairmen Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg in August 2025, before the studio completed its merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. Transformers 8 will be based on a screenplay set in the present day by Jason Fuchs, with Di Bonventura helping with development and Spielberg reading and signing.
Spielberg held creative roles in the first two Transformers films that launched the franchise and generated more than $5.4 billion in global box office revenue as the Hasbro toy brand gained worldwide popularity.
Di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto and Hasbro will produce.
