Last year we reported on gameplay details and screens from The Initiative’s Perfect Dark reboot, which was unfortunately canned by Microsoft.

Today. we found out more about the project and its actual gameplay. We see the weapons in action, and we even see new areas that, as far as we know, have never been seen before.

If you’re a Perfect Dark fan, this will make the cancellation even more painful.

Perfect Gameplay Surfaces for the Dark Reboot

The images below come from VFX artist Tracey Landau, who has over 10 years of experience in various gaming franchises such as Marvel’s Avengers, Call of Duty, Tomb Raider, and more. You can see some of the weapons shown, as well as the traversal and level design in the two-minute gameplay clip.

Unfortunately, this is as close as you can get to the game, which was canceled last year. In our report, the documentation revealed that The Initiative has been working on the game’s Vertical Slice 1 since April 2025. For those unfamiliar with the term, it refers to a playable proof of concept that represents the quality and overall experience of the game.

Rumor had it that this Perfect Dark reboot was planned to be in an episodic format, and honestly, we didn’t know if it would fly then or now.

According to a report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, there was almost a chance that the Perfect Dark reboot could have continued, as Take-Two Interactive (the parent company of Rockstar Games) was in talks with Microsoft and Embracer to finance the game, but as we now know, things didn’t go as planned, leading to the game’s complete cancellation.

Time will tell if Microsoft has any plans for the IP. Perhaps with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, the property will get another chance to prove itself. If so, it will have to come from another developer, as The Initiative, led by Daryl Gallagher (formerly of Crystal Dynamics) and created in 2018, was shut down by Microsoft in July 2025 as part of a corporate restructuring.

Although the reset of the Xbox division has led to many studio closures so far, it also means more console exclusives for the platform, and even a bold chance to finance Hideo Kojima’s spy game Physint. Who knows? Perhaps Perfect Dark will see the light of day under another proprietary studio.
