The Borderlands series has sold more than 100 million copies across all games, developer Gearbox Software announced. No surprise then – the studio also said it was making “big plans” for the future of the evergreen looter shooter.

“The Borderlands franchise has officially surpassed 100 million units sold,” Gearbox boasted in a blog post published today. “Few franchises have ever taken this step, and we certainly didn’t get there alone. For us, it started with the first Borderlands in 2009, and we’re excited about everyone who joined us in Borderlands along the way. Borderlands has always had an incredibly passionate community. We’ve been through a lot together, and your feedback inspires us to create even greater games.”

So where can Vault Hunters hope to go next? Gearbox just completed Borderlands 4’s first year roadmap – which included two new playable characters, two story packs and more – and it’s now “preparing additional content for Borderlands 4 for next year.” There’s no concrete information on what that looks like at the moment, but the studio has promised that weekly updates on community activities and challenges will continue in the meantime.

“We’re also taking a closer look at the franchise as a whole. Where can we take it next? Which characters do you want to spend more time with? Which stories are worthy of recognition? A big part of this is listening to you,” the studio wrote. “That said, big projects take time and we need some space to work. You can be sure we’ll talk more about it when the time is right. Now is your chance to influence what we say.”

Borderlands 4 itself had a “softer” launch than expected, thanks in part to the game’s wobbly PC performance, although it appears to have been a long-term success. A promised Switch 2 port was also delayed indefinitely earlier in the year. We haven’t heard much about this portable version since, but Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said the team was focused on getting Borderlands 4 back into shape before trying to take it elsewhere.

In Eurogamer’s Borderlands 4 review, Rick Lane said the shooter bought “a more sensible script and real open world for its pseudo-cel-shaded weapons show, but these moderate improvements are undermined by frustrating exploration and combat that takes too long to properly shine.”
