Today is the big day. After months of tracking code commits, dissecting leaks, and getting that unforgettable first taste at Google’s New York media showcase, Google Books is officially landing on doorsteps and on store shelves.

Our reviews were literally all filed minutes ago, and right in front of me currently sits one of five new Google Books that I’ve been dying to spend some real time with: the Google Book ASUS 14. The rest of the launch fleet will be unboxed soon, and these initial videos and previews will be released on the Chrome Unboxed YouTube channel as quickly as we can get them in front of the cameras.

But it should be noted that full and comprehensive reviews will naturally take some time. We don’t believe in hastily posting reviews after 48 hours with a brand new platform. However, after spending my morning setting up ASUS, typing on it, and navigating its software, I have some immediate takeaways and a bit of a clearer roadmap for how we’ll cover all of this new stuff over the next few weeks.

The hardware is incredibly good across the board

Just as we came away feeling like we were in New York, the physical hardware that Google and its partners have assembled here is exceptional. Taking the ASUS Googlebook 14 out of the box reinforces just how remarkable its engineering is. It feels light in the hand but remarkably stiff with zero chassis flex. The 14-inch OLED display is bright, punchy and vibrant, and the anti-glare coating works wonders against office lighting without washing out contrast.

The typing experience is clicky and responsive, the haptic trackpad is top-notch, and the speakers are extremely good; producing much richer sound than you’d expect from such a thin laptop. Under the hood, performance is fantastic in the short time I’ve spent tinkering, and I’ve yet to see a single stutter, frame drop, or hint of hesitation.

My only hardware complaint so far? The 1080p webcam. That’s perfectly passable for an everyday video call, but on a $1,299 machine that feels this premium and luxury-oriented in every other setting, a high-end camera sensor really should have made a difference.

A whole new operating system is exciting and overwhelming

Although the hardware makes a phenomenal first impression, the overall reality of living with a Google Book hits you as soon as you log in: This is a completely new operating system.

Yes, there are familiar touches and muscle memory consistencies carried over from ChromeOS. But make no mistake, Googlebook OS is fundamentally different. There is a lot to learn, muscle memory to unlearn, and new workflows to navigate.

From window management and multitasking behaviors to file management, local AI integration and how Android apps run natively on the desktop, the learning curve is real. In these early hours, it feels both exhilarating and slightly overwhelming.

There are a lot of things I like so far, and there are already quite a few things I think Google still needs to work on. As a full-time Chromebook user for over 10 years now, I have clear expectations that just aren’t met from day one. But again, it’s day one, and that means I need to collect my thoughts a bit before I start diving into all of this.

So over the next few weeks, that’s exactly where our coverage is going to take place. We will go deeper:

  • The good, the bad and the weird: Where Googlebook OS truly improves everyday productivity, and where it currently stumbles or creates friction.
  • ChromeOS vs. Googlebook OS: Breaking down the exact feature differences, parity gaps, and what long-time Chromebook users should actually expect before jumping ship.
  • The AI reality check: How deeply integrated tools like Gemini Intelligence, Magic Pointer, and Rambler fit into real-world everyday work.

Setting the stage for rapid evolution

As we begin to dive into this software and put each hardware model through its paces, one essential truth must frame the conversation: We are on day one.

This is a basic platform launch. Just as ChromeOS was very different in year two than it was in its humble beginnings, Googlebook OS will iterate quickly. Features will change, bugs will be fixed, and rough edges will be smoothed out with regular software updates.

We’re going to approach it all with radical honesty: describing what’s brilliant today, what needs to be fixed tomorrow, and whether this new chapter in computing lives up to its immense promise.

Keep your eyes glued to the site and our YouTube channel over the coming days as unboxings go live and our in-depth software series officially kicks off. The Googlebook era is here and we have a lot of work to do.
