The Social Reckoning fails at the box office

As important as some of the messages contained in The social balance sheet are, the film significantly underperformed at the box office. By VarietyAaron’s Sorkin’s sequel to The social network grossed only $5.5 million last weekend, against a budget that was between $30 million and $42 million. That would make it a certifiable flop that would cost Columbia Pictures (and Sony) quite a bit of money, especially when compared to The social networkThe $22 million opening.

This isn’t entirely surprising given the film’s mediocre reviews. It currently has a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been widely criticized on social media. All of this could reflect the fact that audiences are hoping for a proper sequel to The social networkwhich won three Academy Awards for its screenplay (written by Sorkin), editing and music. But it might speak to people who aren’t fully satisfied with Mikey Madison’s performance as whistleblower Frances Haugen or Jeremy Allen White’s turn as Wall Street Journal journalist Jeff Horwitz. (Madison, for her part, told The Hollywood Reporter that it was Sorkin’s vision as a director that prevented her from “authentically and faithfully portraying a real person”, which is what she hopes to do in the future.) It probably also didn’t help that Jesse Eisenberg – who played Mark Zuckerberg in The social network – had no interest in participating in the film, according to Sorkin himself.

Ironically, Blumhouse’s Other mom raked in an impressive $27.5 million this weekend, which probably suggests that people are more interested in horror novels than reminders of how social media has made everyone’s lives worse.
