The tenant activist at the center of Mamdani’s real estate bet
NEW YORK – Cea Tisserandarsonist tenant activist became mayor’s top aide Zohran Mamdanijoined frustrated tenants in May outside a neighborhood of dilapidated brick buildings in East Harlem.
Tenants had gathered to hang a banner on their fire escape that proclaimed in large red and blue letters: “Buyers, move back from our block.”
Their warning – issued ahead of an ongoing auction – was aimed at the type of property investor they feared would snap up buildings like theirs, only to squeeze the last drops of money out of them, leading to further deterioration.
Weaver’s presence underscored a significant shift: In New York City’s perpetual struggle between landlords and tenants, the new mayor was squarely in the latter camp, and there was no better illustration of that fact than Weaver se. She had spent years fighting and often defeating powerful real estate interests, her goal being to get buildings out of a “hamster wheel” of speculation and neglect. Now, under the leadership of the new democratic socialist mayor, she had the opportunity to put city power behind the effort.
