TikTok restores Doc “Musk” account “after an error”
While Alex Gibney attacks Elon Musk with his latest documentary, the Bleecker/Universal project continues to fight against censorship on social platforms.
Following the reported “permanent suspension” of the document MuskOn ‘s promotional TikTok account, the platform claimed the decision was the result of an “error” and has since restored the profile.
“I can confirm that the ad account has been restored after an error,” a TikTok spokesperson told The Verge on Sunday. A source close to production confirmed to Deadline that the account has been restored.
This reversal comes after Bleecker Street was informed on Friday of the “permanent suspension” of the account, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A spokesperson for the distributor expressed “disappointment” with the timing, given the documentary’s premiere this weekend.
Although Musk does not have an investment in TikTok, his longtime friend Larry Ellison, who has also invested in Tesla and Musk’s X, is a co-owner of the short-form video platform.
Last month, Musk-owned YouTube, Instagram, Meta, TikTok and
Producer Nick Shumaker commented on social platforms’ blocking of the trailer, telling Deadline’s Zurich studio: “We need to be as loud as possible about this right now.”
“It feels like the owners of these companies have an interesting perspective on what the First Amendment is,” he said. “I was joking about this with Gibney the other day, it’s almost like a half amendment now… That’s all I can really say because it was a big surprise because the trailer is not a political ad.”
Now showing in cinemas, Musk producers described the project as “a definitive, unvarnished examination” of the tech billionaire and his unsavory business practices.
