Tropical Storm Trudy is rotating in the Pacific and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane in the coming days as it approaches the southwest coast of Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center.

As of 4 a.m. ET on Wednesday, October 14, the center of Trudy was located approximately 405 miles south of Acapulco, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds near 50 mph with higher gusts. Forecasters said Trudy was heading west-northwest at about 10 mph, with a turn to the north-northwest and a decrease in forward speed expected Thursday, Oct. 15.

The hurricane center said “rapid intensification” was expected over the next few days, with Trudy potentially becoming a hurricane by Wednesday evening and a major hurricane by Friday, October 16. Forecasters said residents in southwest and west-central Mexico should continue to monitor the storm’s progress.

Swells generated by Trudy are expected to begin affecting parts of the southern coast of Mexico late this week, with swells likely to cause life-threatening wave and rip current conditions.

This forecast track shows the most likely path of the storm center. It does not illustrate the full width of the storm or its impacts, and the center can move out of the cone up to 33% of the time.

The illustrations include a range of forecasting tools and models, and not all are equal. The hurricane center uses only the four or five best-performing models to help it make its forecasts.
