Trump plan for Gaza: Jared Kushner tries to break the deadlock, but without obtaining guarantees in Israel
Jared Kushner spent an hour and a half with Hamas officials in Egypt on Sunday August 16, then four hours with the government of the Jewish state in Israel the next day. For very poor results. Both son-in-law and emissary of American President Donald Trump, the 45-year-old real estate entrepreneur is no more successful in bringing peace to Gaza than the previous administration, led by Joe Biden. His efforts come as legislative elections loom in Israel, scheduled for October 27.
Hamas has already committed to laying down its arms, by approving, on July 30, the road map drawn up by the Peace Council, an institution created in November 2025 under the leadership of Donald Trump. But the plan was rejected by the Israeli government, which demands total disarmament of the Islamist movement and the demilitarization of Gaza – including the destruction of the tunnels dug by the organization – before considering a withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and its reconstruction. Hamas reiterated its commitment to Jared Kushner, who met, among others, Khalil Al-Hayya, the head of the Hamas political bureau appointed in July, alongside Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish mediators.
