Two dead, 35 injured in shooting at Georgia block party
Two people were killed and 35 others injured in a shooting at a block party early Sunday in south-central Georgia.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that shots were fired around 1:25 a.m. in Vienna, a rural community about two hours south of Atlanta. Local station WALB News 10 described the event as a homecoming party.
Deputies from the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office were patrolling the party at the time, the office said. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene and the injured were transported to several area hospitals.
The office declined to say whether authorities had determined a motive or identified a suspect.
“The investigation remains active and ongoing. At this time, no additional information is available,” Lydia Bullard, the office’s public affairs specialist, said in a statement to NBC News.
Brett Watts, the Dooly County coroner, said the two people who died were both men, ages 20 and 23. Each had gunshot wounds, Watts said, although an autopsy by the medical examiner’s office, scheduled for Friday, could provide a more complete picture. He said the men’s families had been informed.
