More than 200,000 people displaced in Yemen as Houthi conflict intensifies, UN agency says
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Wednesday that 201,217 people “have been forced to leave their homes in Yemen” as conflict intensifies between the Iran-backed Houthis and Saudi-backed government forces.
“People are running for their lives and finding nowhere safe to go,” IOM Director General Amy Pope said in a statement.
“The speed of this crisis is alarming,” added the IOM. “As of mid-September, the IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix counted 76,000 displaced people. At the end of the month, this figure exceeded 145,000. Today, it stands at 201,217 people, or 33,776 households. Almost all of them, 197,755, have fled since September 1.
“Displacements now span 10 governorates. Taiz is the hardest hit, with 114,708 people displaced, or 57 percent of the total,” he also said. “Lahj follows with 42,264, Aden with 20,814, Abyan with 9,030 and Al Hodeidah with 8,244.”
