BALTIMORE —
Community members have expressed disbelief after a beloved couple was assaulted and robbed in Fells Point.
Baltimore police said a man assaulted and robbed a 76-year-old woman and her 60-year-old husband Tuesday morning. The couple had just left breakfast at Broadway Market on Fleet Street.
Vikki Powers, owner of Vikki’s Fells Point Deli inside Broadway Market, has known the couple for decades. Powers told WBAL-TV 11 News the attacker was in the market at the same time as the couple and she believes he targeted them.
“We watched the video (inside the market) and while (the employee) was giving (the victim) his change, we saw the (suspect) walk past them,” Powers told WBAL-TV 11 News. “He saw, then he came down and sat at the table, watched them and followed them.”
City police confirmed detectives were searching for a man last seen wearing a white T-shirt and black pants with white stripes down the sides. He was seen fleeing down South Regester Street. WBAL-TV 11 News obtained surveillance photos of a man matching the description.
Police said the man and woman were taken to hospital and the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries while the woman was seriously injured.
Those who know the couple spoke with WBAL-TV 11 News.
“I mean, at this point, we’re just clinging to prayer and we wish her the best. (Her husband) is at her bedside and we just hope that justice is served,” Keya Little told WBAL-TV 11 News. “I met (the couple) about nine years ago while frequenting Vikki’s Deli and really developed a true friendship with them. They are the sweetest, loving, caring and generous people you could ever meet.”
“They’re some of the nicest people you could ever meet. They’re kind, they’re thoughtful, they’re passionate about the town, they’re passionate about what they do. They frequent the businesses in the community; they’re exactly what you would expect from a person who lives here,” said Gail Furman, a business owner who has known the couple for more than 30 years. “The community is hurting. This is a resident we’re losing. These are people who are out and about in this community all the time who support this community, who love living in Fells Point.”
Police announced no arrests Wednesday.
In a statement on Facebook, Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson said he was aware of the situation and was in close contact with BPD and the State Attorney’s Office.
“I think about both the victims and their families, and the fear that an attack like this creates for everyone who walks these blocks every day. People should be able to move around their neighborhood without wondering if they are safe,” Ferguson said.
