Matt Damon could have starred in Ted.

In a new interview with GQ, Damon revealed that he died while starring in Seth MacFarlane’s 2012 comedy as John Bennett, the best friend of the foul-mouthed, party-loving teddy bear named Ted.

“I don’t want to live with regrets, but I can tell you that I passed away Ted, and I’ve never had this experience where I laughed so much while reading a script”, The Odyssey said the star. “I literally took it to dinner and I was reading parts of it to my friends at dinner. And then I got too smart by half. I don’t know what I was thinking. I was like, Well, maybe the teddy bear is actually the best part.…»

Damon then explained why he decided to go in a different direction – and why he always thinks about what could have been.

“I thought about it too much and talked myself out of it,” he said. “And because it was filmed in Boston, it would have been a blessing for me to be home – my father has passed away now, and I look back and go, Man, that would have been six months ago (House).”

The role ultimately went to Boston native Mark Wahlberg, who stars alongside the talking teddy bear in the 2015 sequel, Ted 2.

Damon praised Wahlberg’s performance, saying the “good actor” got the role and the film turned out great. “I couldn’t have done better,” he added.

The success of the two films later led to a Ted prequel series on Peacock, which ran for two seasons.

Talk with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, the family guy The creator discussed the future of the franchise after the series ends and said he would be interested in directing a third film.

“It’s at Universal. It’s at Peacock. A third season in the near future – I don’t know if that’s planned,” he said. “I floated the idea that maybe we could make a direct call to Peacock Ted features with this casting. This could be something pretty fun. What was it, 10 years between the last Ted movie and the first episode of this series, and people were still here for it. This is a character we can bring back at any time.
