Woman sexually assaulted at knifepoint in Central Park, police say
A woman was sexually assaulted at knifepoint in Central Park over the weekend, police said.
A man approached the 39-year-old victim Saturday evening near East 66th Avenue and Fifth Avenue, brandished a knife and sexually assaulted her, according to New York City police.
Police were called around 9:30 p.m. and the victim was transported to a local hospital. She is in stable condition.
Police have not released a description of the suspect. No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing.
City Council President Julie Menin condemned the attack in a post on X, saying: “I am outraged by this horrific act of violence.”
“My thoughts are with the survivor and I hope she makes a full recovery,” Menin said. “Every New Yorker deserves to feel safe in our city. The perpetrator remains at large, but I am confident that the NYPD will work quickly to apprehend and bring him to justice.”
The assault is the latest attack to take place in Central Park. Last week, a woman riding her bike through the park in the evening was attacked by three men, NBC New York reported. The men hit her in the head and she fought back, she told police. One of them grabbed his bag before running away. She suffered minor injuries to her face, neck and back.
