World’s largest building with its own weather set to be eclipsed by Texas’ $119 billion megastructure

Boeing’s Everett factory in Washington is the world’s largest building by volume, but it could soon be eclipsed by SpaceX and Tesla’s planned Terafab megastructure in Texas.

The Boeing factory in Everett, Washington, holds the title of the world’s largest building by volume, at more than 472 million cubic feet. This massive structure spans 98 acres, while the original Disneyland park in Anaheim, California, occupies approximately 85 acres.

Since its inauguration in 1967, the Boeing factory has produced more than 5,000 wide-body aircraft, making it one of the most extraordinary industrial sites in the world. It even generated its own weather system; when it first opened, clouds would develop under its 90-foot-high ceiling due to moisture buildup.

However, air conditioning now prevents this phenomenon. And its world record dimensions could soon be surpassed by SpaceX founder Elon Musk.

Earlier this year he revealed plans for what he calls “by far the largest and most valuable building on Earth”, reports the Express.

How does Terafab compare to Boeing’s Everett plant?

The proposed Terafab is designed to dwarf even some of the largest industrial structures on the planet, with more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space and an estimated internal volume of approximately 100 million cubic meters. It could stretch for three miles.

In contrast, the Boeing plant in Everett, Washington, holds about 472 million cubic feet, or about 13.3 million cubic meters. Based on these projections, Terafab could occupy space between five and 23 times larger than Boeing’s and approximately 7.5 times its internal capacity, placing it among the largest manufacturing structures ever built.

What do we know about Terafab?

SpaceX and Tesla plan to build the facility in Grimes County, Texas, as they compete for the massive computing capacity required for their upcoming technologies.

Terafab would span an area roughly equivalent to 1,736 standard American football fields. The project’s website says the facility is intended to “bridge the gap between current chip production and future demand – a future among the stars.”

The factory is expected to consolidate the manufacturing, packaging and testing of cutting-edge logic and memory components in one location.

According to SpaceX, this integration could enable faster technological advances and accelerate the deployment of new IT infrastructures.

Semiconductors are expected to support various of Musk’s ventures, including Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots, autonomous Cybercabs and space data centers proposed by SpaceX.

How much will that cost ?

According to Reuters, “a May filing showed that SpaceX proposed an initial investment of $55 billion (£41 billion) to build the Terafab, with the total amount rising to $119 billion (£90 billion) if additional phases are completed.”

However, the project is also expected to generate thousands of job opportunities. Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s office announced the initial phase would generate 3,000 new jobs, with SpaceX receiving a $30m (£22m) grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund.

Terafab is also eligible for the state’s Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program.

Musk said the project would bring advanced manufacturing to the United States while generating thousands of high-paying positions in Texas.
