‘You Can See Everything’ Director Talks Billy Evans Full-Front Photo

“You Can See Everything” audiences expected to be surprised for a variety of reasons while watching the documentary, but a full-frontal shot of Elizabeth Holmes’ partner, Billy Evans, was not something many anticipated experiencing in the theater. Lance Oppenheim, who co-directed the animated A24 documentary with Nathan Fielder, has now revealed how that jarring shower scene came to be – and why Evans might have been OK with revealing everything to begin with.

“I honestly don’t know,” Oppnehim said when asked why Evans would agree to appear nude in a recent GQ interview. “It boggles my mind, but I’ve heard some interesting theories that people have when they see it,” he said, before getting into the technical details of how they filmed it. “There’s a camera in the bathroom, there’s a camera that was on Nathan, there’s a camera outside the bathroom, and there’s an interaction that we see after Billy leaves where he kind of looks at the camera and smiles.”

“So I don’t know what that means, but I feel like there’s enough in there that makes me feel like maybe he was excited that people could see everything and there was full access, I guess,” Oppenheim continued. “But it really beats me, honestly. We were in the car coming back from the gym, and I told Billy, ‘We’ll give you some time to take a shower.’ And Billy said, “You want to film me showering?” I offered to film him in a way to avoid seeing his genitals, but Billy said he didn’t mind being seen naked.

Before the film’s release earlier this month, Evans admitted he hadn’t seen the documentary during his appearance on the “All-In” podcast. “I haven’t seen it. I think maybe it’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever done,” Evans said on the podcast, admitting that Holmes “looked crazy” in the trailer.

Before hitting theaters on October 16, “You Can See Everything” had been quietly in the pipeline for Fielder and Oppenheim for more than three years. The document offers an unhinged look at the Theranos founder a month before she begins an 11-year prison sentence for defrauding investors.

In addition to being eligible for Best Documentary Feature at the 99th Academy Awards, the film will also be submitted in all areas, as seen on the A24 awards site: Best Picture, Director, Production Design, Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound and Original Score.

The film was a big success with audiences, grossing $15.6 million from 855 theaters in its opening weekend (the best start for a non-music documentary in 20 years) and adding another $19.5 million after expanding to 2,655 theaters for its second release.
