CSU defensive coordinator leaves sideline in loss to Oregon State
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Oregon State has taken Colorado State’s defensive coordinator out of the building. Literally.
Tyson Summers, in his second stint as DC for the Rams, was relieved of play-calling duties by CSU coach Jim Mora Jr. after the Beavers scored on their first two drives. Summers then left the bench midway through the 56-26 loss and is no longer with the program.
Mora said it was “a conglomeration of a lot of things” that led to his decision to relieve Summers of play-calling, but that his departure from the team during the first quarter “wasn’t something I would ever consider.”
CSU entered the day ranked 129th in defense and 136th in total defense, then allowed 727 yards Saturday afternoon, a record for both programs.
“He made his own decision to leave the field and he is no longer a part of the program,” Mora said.
Defensive line coach Kenny McClendon took over as CSU’s defensive play-caller. His first career play call was the strip-sack late in the first quarter, which set up CSU’s second touchdown.
“He was put in a very difficult situation and he responded well and the players responded well,” Mora said. “We’re going to improve a lot. He’s a good football coach.”
