Emmy Rossum recently revealed that playing Fiona Gallagher on “Shameless” had lasting off-screen consequences.
Rossum’s nude scenes on the show, which ran for nine seasons, made her love life difficult because of “preconceived notions,” she said. “It got pretty tricky because of the nudity on the show,” Rossum told Maria Sharapova on an episode of “Pretty Tough.” “Every guy I dated had preconceived ideas about who I was or how I was sexually.”
Some conversations were “bizarre,” Rossum said, pointing to a particular experience in which a man hoping to pursue a political career was hesitant to be associated with her because of the scenes.
“He told me, ‘I really want to be president one day.’ And I was like, ‘Wow, that’s a big goal,'” she said. “He said to me, ‘But I want to run for office and date someone who’s been exposed like you have – do you think that would be difficult for me?’ And I was like, ‘That’s a crazy conversation to have.’
Rossum started “Shameless” when she was just 24, which she said was a difficult time to try to date a young actress.
“You’re trying to figure out who you are,” she says. “You flourish as an artist. And there are also all these preconceptions about you that are associated with (you) because your body is your art, right? And people can be confused.”
Before “Shameless,” Rossum starred in “The Day After Tomorrow,” “Mystic River” and “The Phantom of the Opera,” the latter of which earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
