Good morning. Donald Trump experienced a torrid night during a rally in Texas shaken by repeated demonstrations. The US president briefly walked away from the microphone after a protester appeared to approach the stage. At least half a dozen protesters interrupted Trump during his speech in San Antonio, with some being taken away by police. One was physically attacked by an older Trump supporter as he tried to leave the arena.

  • What’s the latest development in the saga of taxpayer-funded pro-Trump ads? The Democratic National Committee has sued the Trump administration in federal court, asking a Washington judge to block the president from using taxpayer money to run a series of ads promoting himself. The ads have so far cost taxpayers more than $12 million, according to media tracking firm AdImpact.

  • Why was Trump forced to distance himself from two of his top aides? Trump claimed he had “no idea who else they were working for” after it was reported that Chris LaCivita, co-manager of his 2024 presidential campaign, and James Blair, a campaign adviser and on-leave White House deputy chief of staff, spent the weekend helping the pro-Russian government of Republika Srpska in the Balkans. Trump said, “I will terminate it immediately” if he determines there is a conflict of interest.

An oil tanker sailing off the northern coast of Qatar has been attacked, causing an unknown number of casualties. The move came as Iran said it would close a route through the Strait of Hormuz used to bypass Tehran’s traffic blockade.

Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general running as a Republican in a Senate race, admitted in a leaked audio recording that rising fuel prices resulting from Trump’s war in Iran were hurting his party ahead of the midterms. The Guardian has requested comment on Paxton’s campaign.

  • What are the developments in the diplomatic conflict between the United Kingdom and Israel? Britain renames its consulate in East Jerusalem a British mission. The move was imposed by the Israeli government as punishment for the British decision to ban trade with illegal settlements. There have been divisions within the British government over whether taking tough measures against Israel now could improve Benjamin Netanyahu’s chances of re-election this month.

The World Health Organization said it did not have a “full picture” of the situation in Russia after the suspected death of a 28-year-old laboratory worker in Siberia from plague last week. Russian authorities have denied any connection with the anti-plague research institute and say Daria Shipilova died of “pneumonia of unknown etiology.” They insist on the absence of risk of a plague epidemic and describe the “sanitary and epidemiological” situation in the region as stable.

  • What did the WHO Director-General say? At a press conference, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “We do not yet have a complete picture of this event. Timely, comprehensive and transparent information sharing is essential to clarify conflicting reports and enable an accurate assessment of potential public risks.”

  • What action does Russia appear to have taken? Authorities imposed strict quarantine restrictions at the laboratory where Shipilova worked and at nearby hospitals. Staff were locked inside the institute for three days, sleeping on the floor and in chairs, while tests were carried out.
