Netflix has a great new show with a high Rotten Tomatoes score, but more importantly, it stars Florence Pugh.

Netflix just released a highly anticipated new miniseries starring a bunch of Hollywood stars, and the reviews are out now so we can see if it was worth all that investment. Based on its critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, it appears so.
East of Eden is live Thursday on Netflix. It is a seven-episode series adapted from the famous novel by John Steinbeck. Although its score has fluctuated a bit, it currently stands at a solid 89% on Rotten Tomatoes with over two dozen reviews. That’s two points above the 1955 film starring none other than James Dean. Surprisingly, Netflix East of Eden is directed by Zoe Kazan, the granddaughter of Elia Kazan, director of the 1955 original.
East of Eden is directed by Florence Pugh, who plays Cathy Ames. Pugh is probably the most in-demand actress in Hollywood today. She will star in Dune Part 3 and plays a leading role in Avengers: Apocalypsethe two huge blockbusters due to release on the same weekend, coining the term “Dunesday”.
Pugh appeared in the Best Picture winner Oppenheimer and more recently in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the movie that made $2.5 billion, because Tom Holland specifically said he wanted to work with her.
Pugh is joined in the East of Eden thrown by Challengers“Mike Faist, who already had a blast in Steven Spielberg’s film West Side History. Additionally, the film stars Christopher Abbott, who will play the very important role of Professor X in the MCU’s X-Men films in the future.
This is the most high-profile television show directed by Florence Pugh, making it an important project for her. His last release in the genre in a significant capacity was The little drummer girl in 2018, before really breaking out in Hollywood. A year later, she received an Oscar nomination for Little women.
What do reviews say about East of Eden? Here is a sample:
AV Club – “With East of Eden, Kazan set a towering new standard for what literary adaptations for television could and should be. It takes a few losses to get there, but by the end of the series, these characters all find room to maneuver in the world they wanted.
New York Post – “East of Eden is a show made for those who enjoy watching a mean Florence Pugh surrounded by sad men.
This one might be my favorite. It goes without saying that East of Eden is poised to debut at No. 1 on Netflix’s top 10, considering these high-profile stars. The real question is how long it’ll be around, but regardless, it’s a win for Netflix, and it’s definitely not something fans should stress over while waiting for a season 2. I don’t think Steinbeck is writing a sequel anytime soon.
