Nicolas Cage says he’s ‘a little homeless’ because of the huge sinkhole that engulfed the driveway of his Malibu home
While sharing his Halloween plans during a main stage appearance Saturday at Los Angeles Comic Con, the “Spider-Noir” star lamented that greeting the treats at home wasn’t part of his itinerary.
“I’m kind of homeless right now,” Cage said in a fan video from the event. “Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just living in hotels. So I don’t have the usual treats I’d like to enjoy tonight.”
Instead, he said his plans for his favorite vacation included taking his daughter trick-or-treating “somewhere in Santa Monica” and then watching Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic, “The Shining.”
“It’s one of my favorite films ever made,” he said.
A massive, expanding sinkhole opened up just outside Cage’s home on Sea Level Drive on September 8, prompting Malibu to declare a local emergency and issue evacuation orders for 31 homes in the oceanfront community. Seven of those homes were red-tagged due to hazardous conditions.
The 25-foot-deep, 30-foot-by-60-foot-wide crater blocks the only road in and out of the neighborhood. The homeowners association that controls the private road is responsible for overseeing the repair efforts. The work includes excavation to recover a soil sample and removal of debris, as well as the installation of sandbags to mitigate further damage caused by high waves and coastal erosion.
In October, Cage obtained four permits to repair the damage caused by the sinkhole.
LA Comic Con marks the “National Treasure” actor’s latest outing to interact directly with his fans. He also appeared at Fan Expo Dallas and New York Comic Con earlier this fall, where he discussed topics including his thoughts on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and AI.
