Joe Mixon went from likely retirement to landing on a third NFL team. The veteran running back’s recent reunion with the Seahawks went well and veteran reporter Jordan Schultz reports the sides have reached an agreement.

Seahawks to sign RB Joe MixonThe Seahawks held a Mixon workout for today, shortly after placing their first-round pick. Jadarian Prize on IR. Mixon will join backfield housing Emmanuel Wilson And George Holani – and we are about to have Zach Charbonnet soon to be in uniform again.

It’s expected to be a practice squad deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who notes that Mixon is set to join Seattle’s 16-man taxi squad after completing a physical today. Mike McDonald has since confirmed (via Brady Henderson of ESPN.com) that Mixon will join the Hawks’ P-team. Given Mixon’s recent health history, the medical component is the central focus of the team’s evaluation of the veteran.

A foot injury kept Mixon out of action last season, and after the Texans cut him this offseason, it seemed likely the veteran guard wouldn’t play in the NFL again. Months later, however, Mixon is on track to play a 10th season. The former Bengals second-rounder was productive in his one healthy season with the Texans, and the Seahawks will see what the 30-year-old has left in the tank.

With Mixon landing on Houston’s reserve/NFI list to start last season, the team didn’t need to elaborate on his injury. More than a year later, we still don’t know exactly what happened with Mixon during the 2025 offseason. The five-time 1,000-yard rusher’s signing in Seattle should provide some details, at least in terms of timeline, on this foggy detour from Houston.

The Bengals were expected to cut Mixon in March 2024, but the Texans sent a seventh-round pick to ensure they could land him. It proved to be a smart move by the AFC South team, which improved its running game thanks to Mixon’s 1,016-yard, 12-touchdown 2024 season. The Texans had extended Mixon — for a two-year, $19.75 million deal that included $13 million guaranteed at signing — shortly after his acquisition, but the 2025 injury short-circuited what looked like a promising partnership.

While providing no clarity on the injury, the Texans continued to extend Mixon’s recovery time after placing him on the reserve/NFI list to open last season. In late November, a report surfaced that Mixon was not expected to play last season. A few months later, the Texans left. Mixon underwent surgery to repair his foot problem and it appears he has recovered sufficiently. While the Seahawks probably shouldn’t expect a premium version of the Oklahoma product to resurface, he’s nonetheless an interesting in-season addition.

Seahawks to sign RB Joe MixonPrice had struggled with fumbling before going on IR with a chest injury, but the Seahawks’ running game hasn’t collapsed like the Texans’ did in 2025. Seattle ranks 13th in rushing and 19th in yards per carry (3.9). Wilson assumed the primary role after Price, but Charbonnet — who suffered a torn ACL in the divisional round last season — returned to practice thanks to the NFL’s rule change regarding the PUP list.

Players on the PUP list could begin practicing in Week 3 this season, although they still won’t be cleared to play until Week 5. The Seahawks opened Charbonnet’s practice window last week, but plan to give the fourth-year RB a ramp-up period. He and Mixon will both be key figures in Seahawks practices going forward, and a crowded committee could soon form thanks to the presences of Wilson and Holani. The price will be in IR until at least week 6.

The Bengals signed Mixon to a four-year, $48 million contract from 2020-2022; they gave him a pay cut in 2023. It stands to reason that Mixon will be playing on a veteran’s minimum contract or something close to it once he joins the Hawks’ 53-man roster. Seattle can use three team P elevations on Mixon before signing him to its active roster.
