Trump touts gains from war in Iran and leaves door open for new strikes before midterms
President Donald Trump said Sunday that he believes the war with Iran will be won “very soon,” while acknowledging that further military strikes before the midterm elections are “possible.”
“I think what’s going to happen is we’re going to win this war very soon, and as soon as we win it, oil is going to go down, way down to where it was before the war,” Trump said at the PGA Tour’s Presidents Cup.
“And the bottom line is that Iran will not have nuclear weapons,” he added, saying nuclear deterrence was “the key to all of this.”
Asked further about Operation Economic Outcast and whether Washington was winning through military or economic means, Trump said the United States was succeeding on both fronts.
“I think either way. I think we’ll win it both ways. We’ve already won it from a military point of view,” he said.
“But that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped it.”
“We’re definitely winning big. If you look at their economy, it’s gone.”
“They don’t have an economy,” he said of Iran.
“The value of their money, as they say, has no value. We have inflation. They now have inflation close to 300%. I heard 318% this morning. 300, which means their money is shot, their economy is shot, their military is shot. They are in trouble.”
When asked specifically whether military strikes could be on the table again before the midterm elections, Trump refused to rule them out.
“I don’t want to say that. I don’t want to say that. I mean, it’s possible, but I just don’t want to say that.”
